Taking a Hike

It is my intention to take a hike, lots of them, in 2026. I mean that literally and figuratively.

The literal intention is simple—all I need to do is get outside and put one foot in front of the other more than I have been. I know when I do this, I’ll feel better mentally, physically, and emotionally.

But what does it mean to me to figuratively take a hike? That intention applies specifically to social media, from which I’ll be, largely, taking a break for some months. I have noticed myself scrolling more and more, and more and more mindlessly. That isn’t how I want to spend such a big chunk of my remaining days. I’d rather my screen time be writing time. So I’ve taken those pesky apps off my phone, where it’s just too easy to while away a minute or 30, starting with the mere flick of a thumb. I haven’t closed my accounts, so you may see me online, occasionally. Very occasionally. I won’t be posting much on my website either, concentrating instead on finishing the first draft of my new novel. Then starting the next draft.

Please don’t worry (like I often do when a friend disappears from social media), I’m just taking a hike. And writing a novel. And cuddling with Skipper. And reading lots of good books. And taking some trips. Well, you get the idea.

What will you be prioritizing in 2026?

Here are some photos I haven’t shared yet, from a Thanksgiving Day hike, my first visit to “the White Place” near Abiquiu.

Wow, I love the different meanings of taking a hike, not only physically or metaphorically, but also of place and style. I love these photos. It looks like an amazing place. Your hikes and the ones we have here are polar opposites! You need to come visit the Great Smoky Mountains (in my backyard) and take a hike . . . a totally different experience. We have lots of rocks too, but you have to hunt for them. You look like you are hanging off the side of a cliff. All of this a great way to look at life!

Great photos! I loved your priorities! I am doing the same thing! I totally agree! I get so many people asking for my help – I just have to say no more and more and sit back and relax and enjoy life and friends. It has been a super Christmas with all of the family back home and lots of time with the grandkids!
